Student made tower defense game made in Unreal 5 where you play as aliens trying to conquer earth defending your landing site.
Working with four other students, I was the main 3D artist, most of the 3D assets, all of the animations, Animation Blueprints, as well as cell shading and pulsating shaders.
After we came up with the initial concept of the aliens, I worked on the concept art. Initially, we thought the aliens would be enemies, so I tried to use bright, toxic colors and triangles to make them appear like a threat. After working on the narrative, we decided to change the role of the aliens to the player instead. After this change, I switched the shape language, giving the aliens a round and goofy look.
When making the models and the animations I optimized for readability and performance. Since the camera will see the models scaled down or far away, if the models were very detailed the characters and units would look too busy and hard to read. Instead, using simple and large details with less polygons allows for models that are easy to read and allow for the game to be more optimized.
